How to Write a Tagline:
Read our informative steps and tips for writing your very own business tagline.
Review your mission statement.
Underline important words.
Read your company's mission statement several times and underline any important words that highlight what your company does or how your company does it. These words may be essential to your tagline.
A mission statement is already a short statement, but you need to condense it even more and identify the core message that it communicates about your business.
Review your products/services.
Identify a niche.
Is there something unique about what your business offers? What exactly is it? These specific details could be helpful when you're trying to think of a tagline.
The best taglines don't necessarily mention the business's speciality by name. Instead, they allude to the quality of that thing. For example, KFC's "Finger lickin' good" is descriptive of their main product, fried chicken, but it does't use the word "chicken."
Write a few sentences.
Don't worry about making it sound perfect the first time.
The next step isn't to write the perfect tagline. Rather, write down a few sentences that sum up the spirit of your business. Don't be too critical about what you put down, just get something on paper. You can repeat this exercise several times and then read the sentences back to yourself later. You may find that a few things jump out.
Make it shorter.
Remove unnecessary words.
This is where you have to be a bit more critical than you were in the previous step. Take the paragraph you just wrote and cut out any and all unnecessary words. The goal here is to get down to a full sentence (or less) that conveys something essential.
Let the reader fill in the blanks.
It can be tempting to pack a bunch of information into your tagline to make sure that people know what you're talking about. However, that's not really the point of a tagline. Consider Nike's "Just do it." They could have said, "Just go out and exercise," or "Just play the sport that you love," or "Don't make excuses for not performing at a high level," but they went way more basic than that.
It's okay to let people fill in the blanks and draw them in with something simple.
Test your tagline.
Share with friends and family.
If you have come up with a tagline that you think might make the cut, share it with friends and family who will give you their honest feedback.
See how it looks with your logo.
It might sound silly, but try placing your new tagline beside your company logo. How does it look? Even though the sound of a tagline is important, the aesthetics still need to be considered.
