How to Do a Connecticut Business Search:
Before you can apply for a name reservation or file formation documents, you will need to ensure that your desired business name is available by performing business entity and trademark searches using various online tools.
Conduct a Connecticut business search online.
Go to the Connecticut Business One Stop website.
The Connecticut Business One Stop website offers a business records search tool that can be used to search for entities by name, business ALEI, or filing number. The registry will list any entities with matching or similar names to your proposed business name.
Perform a business search.
Enter your proposed business name in the search field and click on the search icon to the right of the search box.
According to the state, your name must be distinguishable from other entities in the database.
Be sure to search alternate spellings and similar names to ensure that your proposed business name does not clash with those of other entities in the database.
View the search results.
The number of results of your search will be indicated below the search tool. If there are no matches, it will read "0 results found."
If there are any businesses with matching or similar names, you will see a list of entities, along with their business ALEIs, current status, and address. You can click on the name of each entity to view more information.
If a business entity has been formally dissolved, you may apply to reserve or adopt the name. The SOS will make the final decision.
Additional Connecticut business search steps.
Perform trademark searches.
Trademark searches are advisable as the business search outlined above is limited to business names registered with the state and does not include state or federal trademarks.
Use the Connecticut SOS trademark search tool to search for trademarks and service marks registered with the state.
Search the United States Patent and Trademark Office's (USPTO) trademark database to check for registered federal trademarks.
File a name reservation.
To prevent your business name from being snapped up by someone else, you may apply to reserve your name for up to 120 days.
Simply download and complete the Application for Reservation of Name and mail it or deliver it in person to the state's BSD, along with the $60.00 filing fee.
